Research project

Environmental monitoRIng through Civic engagement (ERICA) is funded by the Erasmus + program under the project number KA220-ADU-7C0C0062 and led by Professor AMU Aleksandra Lis-Plesińska at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

The overarching objective of the ERICA project is to leverage citizen science and to equip citizens with the necessary skills and knowledge to engage with climate action and environmental protection, as well as to enhance public understanding of climate change and the local effects of the fossil fuel industry. This will be achieved by providing a new educational methodology on citizen science for environmental monitoring, enabling knowledge transfer and information exchange. Moreover, adult citizens will be trained on practically applying the data collected, making them “actionable knowledge”: of recognizable practical value and of immediate use for citizens, local governments, academia and NGOs.

Specific research objectives include:

1. Enhancing citizens’ understanding of the significance of environmental monitoring in combating climate change by collecting knowledge and best practices on existing citizen science initiatives at EU level.

2. Improving the skills and abilities of adult citizens in organizing and participating in citizen science initiatives for environmental monitoring.

3. Improving knowledge on the use of technologies in community-based environmental monitoring actions, consequently enhancing digital skills related to environmental monitoring technology.

4. Raising awareness among adults about the environmental effects of the fossil fuel industry, empowering adults to become active participants in combating climate change through citizen science.

5. Improving public access to and use of environmental data to encourage the utilization of information and actionable knowledge for a variety of activities including events for citizens, educational activities, environmental campaigns and cocreation of local policies.

The project research team includes: Prof. Aleksandra Lis-Plesińska, Dr. Karolina Dziubata-Smykowska, Dr. Marek Jaskólski.
